BEST Event at Knipton

On Sunday 16 August, a group from our R&R team, including three of our coaches, were encouraging youngsters up to early teens to have a go at bowls. The slight twist was that we were playing on an artificial cricket wicket in the middle of a big field in view of Belvoir Castle - not exactly what you would expect for an indoor bowls club! We were taking part in the Belvoir Education and Sports Trust (BEST) Family Day. Over the four hour event, some thirty children and parents had a go and all took away details of the club and the sessions that we could offer them, bringing all the fun of the big carpet game. We were visited by Annie Dunham, from the Bowls Development Alliance, who also enjoyed the challenge of bowling on the far from level green. The children had a great time and it is hoped that we will see some of them at the club in the near future. A great job done on the day. Thanks to Peter Kipling for this report.

Guide Dogs Presentation 16th April 2026

Melton & District Indoor Bowls Club had two unusual guests at the coffee morning last Thursday: Ambassador Guide Dogs Rusty and Cassie, accompanied by volunteer Steve Giles. They were at the club to receive a cheque for Β£3088-68 for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, which was President Hazel Armstrong's chosen charity during her year of office. This sum qualifies the club to name a guide puppy and the name chosen by the club is Melton (which has now been approved). Hazel Armstrong would like to thank all those members who supported her throughout the year in raising such a magnificent amount. Guide Dogs is one of the UK's leading sight loss charities. Every day, 250 people start to lose their sight in the UK; guide dogs make sure they don't lose their freedom as well. It costs over Β£35,000 to train a guide dog fully so that it can have a working partnership of six to eight years, after which the dog enjoys a well-earned retirement. There are never enough dogs to meet the needs of all those who could benefit, so every penny raised makes an important contribution. Rusty and Cassie began their lives as guide dog puppies, but both were selected for breeding. Cassie had one litter of 8 puppies, of whom 5 went on to be guide dogs, but she was unable to continue breeding because she developed skin problems when she came into season. Rusty had four litters, starting when she was two years old, with a total of 32 puppies. Her final litter is just completing training. She also helped to foster puppies which had been abandoned by their mother. Not every guide dog puppy qualifies to become a guide dog; some are selected as stud dogs or guide dog 'mums' at the breeding centre, some may exhibit health problems and some may be temperamentally unsuited. Volunteers like Steve Giles and his wife have supported the programme by looking after guidee dog mums and their litters until the puppies are about 8 weeks old, when they go to puppy raisers for more individual attention and training. Cassie and Rusty are now in retirement in their 'forever home' with Steve Giles and his wife. Cassie is twelve and a half years old and beginning to slow down. Rusty is nine years old and, like many of our retired volunteers at M&D IBC, will continue to contribute to society as she has just been registered as a therapy dog.
